Sherwin

Under construction|Montreal

The Sherwin project reimagines and transforms the site formerly occupied by the Canadian Paint Co. into a modern, sustainable residential complex. Located at the intersection of Chatham, Hunter, and Canning streets, this 162-unit development stands out for its design, which balances heritage preservation, urban integration, and resident well-being.

Three key principles structure the project:

  • Strategic setback along Hunter Street: This setback ensures an open space that reduces the visual impact of the seven-story building, maintaining a human scale and redefining the streetscape.

  • Central green space: An inner garden serves as a tranquil, communal area, providing a natural, calming environment at the heart of the site.

  • Inhabited streets: Ground-floor units designed as townhouses with private entrances or terraces establish a direct connection between residents and their surroundings.

These design choices harmonize the project with its context while enhancing residents' quality of life.

Architecturally, the top two floors are recessed to minimize volumetric impact, while balconies and loggias add dynamism to the facades. A commemorative wall honors the site’s industrial history by incorporating visual elements and materials inspired by the former factory, such as red brick and protruding bond patterns.

The landscaped areas continue this narrative, blending heritage with modernity. An oversized porte cochère—a nod to the site's industrial past—marks the main entrance, leading to the inner garden and adding a monumental yet welcoming dimension to the project.

The Sherwin project is firmly committed to eco-responsibility:

  • Energy efficiency: A high-performance building envelope, abundant fenestration for natural light, cantilevered balconies to reduce overheating, and a green roof to mitigate urban heat islands.

  • Sustainable landscaping: The inner garden, native plantings, green alley, green roofs, and communal terraces encourage biodiversity and enhance outdoor comfort.

  • Active and green mobility: 244 bike spaces, parking for electric vehicles, a car-sharing service, and proximity to public transit, including the Georges-Vanier metro station.
